Australia has one of the most active Scientology Volunteer Ministers groups in the world. The Volunteer Ministers Video Channel website features many Australian Scientologists.
Canberra has a history of contributing such volunteers. Rev. Nick Broadhurst (now of Canberra), lead Scientology volunteers from Indonesia, South Africa, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, New Zealand, USA, Canada, France and Australia, and stayed nine months helping the devastated city of Banda Aceh in Indonesia, which had received the full impact of three consecutive tsunami's in late 2004. Other Canberra Scientology volunteers were also present. The region was in civil war when the tsunamis struck.
Over 150,000 people were individually helped by Scientology volunteers during this time. The Church in Canberra is proud to have those who served in Aceh amongst its staff and parishioners.
In 2010 and 2012 Scientology volunteers found themselves in many areas helping those stricken by disasters. There were floods in Victoria. There were worse floods in Queensland. There was the earthquake in Christchurch. There were floods in the Philippines and Thailand. Scientology volunteers, coordinated from Sydney, attended them all in their familiar yellow shirts.
Today there are a quarter of a million registered Scientology volunteers all over the world, trained in disaster relief activities. This makes the Volunteer Minister Core the largest relief organization on Earth today.
Most recently there have been heroic efforts in Japan, after the largest earthquake and resulting tsunami devastated the main island of Honshu's north eastern coast line. The relief efforts have so far, after several months, helped a quarter of a million people directly, and with that number rising with each new day.
