Have You Lived Before This Life contains 42 case-studies of past-life incidents discovered during 21 October - 29 November 1958. The book contains an introduction to the subject of past lives, a statement on how the survey was conducted and by whom, and reports by persons attending. These incidents are dated between the twentieth century and back further, and their locations range from England, Norway and Tibet. Here Scientologists penetrate the amnesia of past lives.
This edition includes an article by L. Ron Hubbard on the phenomena of death, a historical sketch of past lives and a description of modern Scientology counseling that addresses it. The main body of the book contains excerpts from the counseling sessions in which past lives were contacted.

It is very natural for me to understand now that past lives are a natural and logical consequence of one's existence through time. I, myself, being of a generally skeptical nature, was extremely doubtful of past lives at first. After all, I reasoned, anyone could create fantasies of past experiences, fabricated of bits and pieces of data and a fertile imagination. SCIENTOLOGY TECHNOLOGIES

Scientology technologies used in therapy differ greatly from hypnotism. In hypnotism the aim is to put the patient to sleep and make him as irresponsible as possible for his answers. In Scientology, the reverse is true -- the patient is made more and more alert, more and more responsible and truthful.
A "past life," for instance, brought out of a patient by hypnotism has little value since it is taken from an irresponsible subject. A "past life" recovered by Scientology techniques is detailed by a fully alert, responsible person who, by heightened powers of awareness, has direct and full knowledge of anything that has occurred to him. Therefore, if this were simply a recounting of forty-one experiences taken from hypnotized people, it would have little value4. But forty-one experiences recovered from fully alert people with no hypnotism, suggestion, or persuasions of new scientific value and casts a different light on the possibility of 'past lives."
In the first place, none of these people were told to recover a life. They were asked....
